Family: His Ultimate Joy

BETTER THAN LASAGNA

David’s children and grandchildren were the source of his greatest pride and joy. There was nothing that would light up his face more than receiving a phone call or message from them. And a video recording or photos of “The Grands” would be watched over, and over, and over for days on end.

‘Surrounded by family’ was his happy place

There was nothing on this earth David savored more than the precious minutes spent with his family. Greater than even his love of lasagna, or chocolate, or Fig Newtons, or a new computer, or cheesecake (only Juniors!), or the NY Knicks! David was also a dutiful and loving son to his mother, Gladys, moving her from North Carolina to Chicago to care for her in his home with his wife for many years when his mother became ill.

MARRIED LIFE

David and Angie created a profoundly connected, peaceful life together built initially on their shared loves of travel and technology, and strong beliefs around the importance of talking through everything.

They were the quintessential homebodies who genuinely enjoyed ‘just being in the house together’, making one another laugh, and planning their next road trip adventure. For Angie’s mother, Josephine, David was the perfect son-in-law, always there to help out around her home, or driving them to cultural events he didn’t want to attend (#ballet), and with David always excited to talk with her endlessly about the latest political or cultural hot topic.

David and Angie doted on one another day in and day out, enjoying the simple pleasure of being able to live out life with their best friend. They worked consciously at making sure they both knew every day that the other knew the love they found was blessed and never taken for granted.

Visitors in their home would notice the heart-shaped notes Angie would leave around the house, with David posting “Love is” cartoons randomly to reaffirm his love. Friends and family knew them to be…

…an affectionate, hard working, easy going couple.

As they enjoyed their years together, they were rooted in the unshakable knowledge that God was ultimately in control of their days, no matter the visible circumstances or suffering. Whether attending a local praise service, or getting up at 2 am to watch the glory of a meteor shower together, they found ways to show their reverence of and respect for the Creator of all things… even as the tides began to turn David remained unshakable and unafraid. “This is just part of life… we’ve all got to go eventually.”

He was a protective, patient, kind husband and father who cherished his family more than anything else in his life.
